You are an Infinite, Divine, Perfect Soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The great sages of the Upanishads proclaimed almost 2,500 years ago, \u201cKnow your own soul, for you can know God only then In other words, the road to God lies not through the outer world of matter, but through our inner world of spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first step toward understanding God is to become conscious of our soul as distinct from our body. For the infinite ocean of consciousness is God (see our article: Who is God?), and our souls are on its surface like individual waves. If we know the wave then we have experienced the ocean too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so the sages proclaimed that each of us must discover for ourselves that we are in essence the spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is only when we have understood our soul\u2019s true nature that sorrow will disappear and hope will vanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the essence of our spirit, then?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Soul\u2019s Essence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atman, which means the \u2018breath of life\u2019, is the Sanskrit word for the spirit. The soul is the defining factor that distinguishes dull and dead matter from life. What remains after the body dies is the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Soul Is Formless, Eternal, Divine, and Everlasting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Universe is founded and driven by consciousness. Universal Consciousness is the final reality (God). This Supreme Consciousness is widespread. The whole world is pervaded by its evolutionary forces. It regulates all the processes of existence.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aitareya Upanishad-Upanishad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the creation of space was preceded by consciousness, it does not obey the laws of space, and can therefore not be bound by space. The subtle force of consciousness, like the air we breathe, is present everywhere. It is in other words, omnipresent; it permeates all. In addition, because space does not absorb consciousness, that is to say, it can not trap consciousness or hold it within certain boundaries in a specific location, consciousness is formless. It doesn\u2019t have a shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now we also understand that consciousness can not be influenced by time because the ocean of consciousness existed before time even started. Thus, since in the subtle world, consciousness is eternal and everlasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
