Meditation has been an age-old practice that has transcended across millenniums, used by sadhus, revered gurus, kings and all individuals in their path to achieving clarity of mind, thought and spiritual awakening. The last century has seen tremendous growth in the usage of meditation as a tool to battle against everyday progress deterrents such as anxiousness, mental blockades, depression and other societal induced factors that have contributed to an increase in psychological stress triggers in today’s fast-paced world. Meditation has aided everyday individuals to refocus on themselves, reflect, realign and reclaim their inner power and strength through the simple practice of mindful meditation.

Thanks to the advancement of science these practices and their ensured impact can now be accurately measured and quantified scientifically through the usage of fMRI and EEG instruments. These studies are among countless others that have time in and over establish the fact that the simple act of conscious breathing combined with mental focus can reduce psychological growth deterrents such as stress levels drastically through continued  practice.. Meditation with purpose has many benefits!

Recent research by the John Hopkins University, published in the Journal of the American Medical University, has showcased the measured benefit of meditation in reducing stress, anxiety, depression and pain. Researchers as such suggest that human attention can be separated into two distinct networks: one associated with focused or intentional attention to information, and another with open awareness or monitoring of the environment without reacting.

According to a study by the Harvard Medical School , meditation can physically change the brain and body and may improve many health conditions. In 2011, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) released findings from a study in which magnetic resonance images were taken of the brains of 16 participants two weeks before and after the participants joined the mindfulness meditation (MM) program by researchers. Through these studies scientists have seen that parts of the brain associated with regulating emotion and responding to stress are more regulated, in addition to finding that brief periods of meditative training increases the amount of grey matter in the hippocampus and parietal lobe of the participants. It was also seen that there was an increase in attention control and efficiency in people who meditate regularly.

A regular meditation practice (four times a week or more) has been shown to increase serotonin production in the brain and to decrease dopamine, which is the hormone related to increased stress and anxiety.

Continued practice of meditation has been seen to improve one’s ability to control attention, by increasing focus and ignoring distractions. The advantage of having regulated attention is that it improves cognitive functions, including memory, learning, and emotional adaptiveness in our day to day interactions.

Now that we have seen irrefutable scientific proof on the effects of meditation, let us take a look at elaborating common positive impacts that meditation can help achieve:

  1. Improve one’s ability to learn new things-

Meditation has always been the best way to cope with mental health but it has also been known for promoting improving learning ability. Regular practice of mediation helps you to increase your concentration that plays an important role in adapting to new learnings. Meditation acts as a tool to exercise and relax your mind for an increased grasp in learning day to day work, habits and practices.

2.     Increase Chakral Alignment:

Chakras are the term given to energy vortexes in one’s body. As per spiritual sciences, chakras help in regulating the energy flow within one’s body. A blockage in a particular chakra can translate itself externally as a physical or mental illness. Meditation helps in activating your chakras and in regulating their flow. It progressively limits the mind with the illusions that disturb you from concentration. Once the brain connectivity is activated through meditation, it helps in better understanding and enhances one’s concentration. It also helps in understanding the connection between a person’s mind, body and soul.

3.     Lower stress levels:

Stress level produces hormones called cortisol. The later harmful effect of stress such as the release of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines. “Mindful meditation” reduces inflammation responses caused by stress. Imagine how wonderful it would be if you could lead a stress-free life through a simple daily process of awareness achieved through meditation that can catapult your wellbeing.

4.     Cuts Anxiety and Depression:

Anxiety and meditation both can’t stay together, that is a fact. Once you are into deep and regular meditation, anxiety has no room to grow. When you concentrate and meditate it helps your body to relax and focus on the positive aspects of your growth and realign your thoughts into a practical and relatable approach.

A blend of a little bit of spirituality will help you to clear the impurities and calm your mind and body while feeding your soul.

These are some of the benefits that even science has approved to be in favour of meditation. In a nutshell, meditation is modern-day medicine that is effective and scientifically proven. Meditation should be practised by everyone baring age and health. Along with mental healing, it has done wonders in curing physical ailments too.

But if meditation has existed for a prolonged period of time, what seems to be the difficulty in adapting this evergreen process in people’s daily life?

Many a time the difficulty is not in the process but in its approach. Individuals come from different walks of life, carrying different experiences and learnings. What may seem practical and reasonable to one may not seem efficient to another, this is where we revive the simple approach of adopting the learnings of a Spiritual teacher, one that has traversed this path and has learned the ways of successfully imparting knowledge through effective learning.
