The primary difference between persona and personality is that persona refers to a character considered by a performance artist or a writer and personality refers to the psychological characteristics of an individual.

Persona

Persona can be used in daily usage. It is a character or a social role played by actors. Derived from the Latin language, this word is originally referred to as a theatrical mask. The meaning of persona during the Roman period transformed indicates a character.

It turned out to be apparent that various individuals could play the same role, such as duties, powers, rights and legal attributes followed by the roles. Actors playing the same or different roles having the exact legal attributes can also come in the same court appearance.

When it comes to the internet, users happen to create virtual Persona which can also be termed online or internet identities. When it comes to stories and Fanfiction written by the writers through the medium of the internet, they are also considered by authors as a kind of subtle self-insertion.

Personality

Personality refers to the characteristic thought patterns, behaviours and feelings that make an individual unique. Personality arises inside an individual and stays consistent throughout their life. Some of the examples of personality can be discovered in how you describe the traits of other people.

The word personality originated from a Latin term persona. It refers to a mask worn by actors for projecting various roles or disguising their identities. There are various definitions when it comes to personality but generally, people concentrate on the characteristics and behaviour patterns that can predict and explain the behaviour of a person.

The different explanations when it comes to personality can concentrate on numerous influences. These range from the effects of genetics to the importance of the environment and the experience in shaping the personality of an individual.

Persona and Personality

As far as history is concerned, both persona and personality have worked with similar of same meanings that included:

  • Juridical person
  • Any individual
  • An influential person
  • Grammatical person
  • A character within a play
  • A person of Trinity

When it comes to the usage of these words in the 19th century, the term persona was used to refer to people of classes having low social importance. Speakers generally use this term for understanding distancing expressions. Persona, in general terms, is considered to refer to the personality that a person projects within a public appearance.

Characteristics of personality

What makes a personality exactly? Patterns and traits of thought and emotion are said to play important roles. These are some of its characteristics:

  • Affects actions and behaviours: Personality does not just influence how we respond or move in our environment. But, it leads us to act in particular ways.
  • Consistency: This is regularity and recognisable orders to behaviours. People act in a similar manner or similar ways in numerous situations.
  • Multiple expressions: When it comes to personality, it is displayed in many forms other than just the behaviour. You can also see it in your feelings, thoughts, social interactions and close relationships.
  • Both physiological and psychological: Personality refers to a psychological construct. But, when it comes to research and studies, it is said that the influence of needs and biological processes also play an important role.

Characteristics of persona

Persona can be described by the following characteristics when you are thoughtful in planning out something:

  • Picture: Persona in a picture is the key part of constructing effectiveness. When you are shown a real picture of a person that no one knows, it helps humanize the persona. It enables you to consider that it is an actual person and makes it more approachable.
  • Name: Giving a name to a persona is an essential part of developing a useful persona. Making it as close to resembling an actual person is finally the goal because every actual person comes with a name. Giving a name to a persona makes it simpler to refer to the persona, rather than just referring to an idea.
  • Background: Persona can be pretty helpful to understand how people are going to navigate. But, when you include a background for the Persona, you can understand your motivations.
  • Age: It is one of the things that is often overlooked when assigning a persona. The persona needs to have an age that represents understanding more about the character.

Wrapping Up

It often becomes challenging to understand the difference between persona and personality. But the primary thing that you need to understand is the elements of these two things that contribute a lot when it comes to a person’s character. Understanding personality psychology is pretty much more than just an academic exercise. The discovery from research can have essential applications in the domain of business, health, medicine, Technology, economy and more. By developing a better knowledge of how this work, you can look for innovative ways to enhance both public and personal health.
