What is a Goof Friday?
In between March and April, according to the lunisolar calendar of Christians, a Friday is considered the day of commemoration for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Various communities celebrate it. Differently, we will get to know you further.
Why is the day celebrated?
According to Synoptic Gospel (Mathew, Mark, and Luke), the mainstream Christian tradition believes that the last supper of Jesus with his disciple was a Passover seder. The day was celebrated to respect the sacrifices of Jesus Christ. This was the day when he sacrificed his life and delivered the message of harmony. Despite being punished for thinking of the well-being of people, he was hanged on the cross. So, the day is celebrated to offer him respect for all he did for humanity.
Why this name?
Good sounds like anything that happens to please us, but the meaning is completely reversed here. Here good means ‘Holy’. It is termed as Holy Friday. The Gregorian tradition believes Good to be of ‘God’, which means “God’s Friday.” So, there a different meaning from different perspectives.
When is this celebrated?
According to Christianity, the crucifixion was done on 15 Nisan of the Jewish calendars on the first day of Passover. Whereas according to the Gregorian calendar, the date would be 7th April.
Christians, however, do not go with the same theory. They do not commemorate on the same day but according to the Jewish lunisolar calendar and Gregorian solar calendar.
