Vijayadashami or Dasara/Dussehra is an important Hindu holiday that marks the victory of Rama over Ravana, who kidnapped Sita. The festival gets its name from the Sanskrit words “Dasha hara,” meaning “the defeat on the tenth.” Since Dasara is symbolic of the victory of good over evil, it is typically celebrated on the 10th day of Ashvina (Sept-Oct) with a full moon. Dussehra overlaps with Navarathri and Durga Puja. For some, it is also the sign to prepare for Diwali.

Dussehra Stories Across The Country

Many mythologies surrounding Dasara and Vijayadashami celebrate the defeat of evil. In certain parts of the country, there is an effigy of Ravana mounted and burnt by a person dressed as Lord Rama. There is a celebration after this to signify that the good people have won again.

As God has previously revealed, human souls were initially shining like a star with energy, peace, purity, and bliss. When we were first “born” on earth, our powers were so bright that the holiness could be seen through the physical body with qualities like happiness, joy, and love.

Once the cycle of life and death came to be, we started identifying ourselves with our physical bodies than our spiritual ones, eventually forgetting the existence of the “eternal soul.” The mythologies describe our senses and their various attractions. E.g: The golden deer in Ramayana is representative of our material attractions while our consciousness and self-control is shown in terms of the “Lakshman Rekha.”

Significance Of Dussehra

Ravana, Lanka’s King, was a very dedicated devotee of Lord Shiva. Ravana was a strategic and cruel demon king. He had ten heads, which signify his complete knowledge of the Vedas and Upanishads, making him as powerful as ten scholars.

Another way of interpreting ten heads is the combination of the five Gyan and Karm indriyas. Ravana used his skills for destruction and therefore personifies a person chasing material goods and is greedy for power and women. Despite his might and wealth, Ravana was not happy. It is said that in the absence of love and compassion, one becomes egotistical. Ravana, therefore, symbolizes ego.

Rama, on the other hand, was the personification of all things “good and just.” He is used as an example of the Perfect Man and Lord of Virtue. Rama lived a life where he followed his dharmas and endured all the hardships life threw at him. He even lived in a forest for 14 years because of a promise he made to his father. He has since become a symbol of our peaceful and loving spirit.

The ongoing conflict between good and evil is visible in everyone physically, mentally, and emotionally. So it is the perfect time to take the pledge to get your life in order and work on getting rid of your vices. The choice is ours in the end.
